Road wheels and rims

We didn't stop until we could guarantee you would

We are constantly asked why we haven’t produced a road rim yet. Finally, in 2017 the wait will be over. And it has been the most difficult road we have travelled down yet!

So why has it taken so long? Because we won’t compromise.

Carbon Clincher Road rims all have one inherent flaw, and that flaw is the braking surface cannot withstand the high temperatures generated from the friction between the brake pad and the rim. As the surface heats, the resin degrades and melts, the pressure exerted on the rim from the tyre pressure (which also expands from the heat creating more pressure creating a vicious circle) pushes the two sides of the rim outwards, the first sign something is wrong is the brakes pulsing as they rattle past the bulging rim, the next sign is the tyre exploding off the rim. We consider this a compromise…

The requirement we set was simple, the tyre must melt and explode before the rim. Simple enough. It took over 2 years to get it right, extensive testing of a multitude of resins, layups, profiles and braking surface finish and brake pads.

The end result. Zelvy 'Hardshell' braking surface.

We guarantee our rim will not melt and deform from brake induced heat*, really?! who else does that!? . PLUS we warranty the braking surface for wear for 2 years*. And the rim for 5 years*.

NOT TOO BIG, NOT TOO SMALL...

Just like our infamous Mountain Bike rims, there is no clear winner in the rim height debate.  That's why we offer three different heights (4 if you count the 62mm front on the combination wheelsets). But it's just a part of our NO COMPROMISE Ethos, you get what you want, not what we tell you.

38mm

This is the only wheelset you will ever need, the 38mm PDL-R offers a significant aero advantage, still comfortable for long rides, no matter what the sidewind is, light enough for the climbs. And like all our road wheels, strong enough for long descents.

50mm

At 50mm high the PDL-R50 is ideal for the weekend Tri enthusiast who doesn't wants aero, but still something that is cross-wind tolerable. Perfection for the local or international crit race. Lovely on a tour too. We have tested these wheels in some pretty swift Toowoomba winter side winds, definitely not as stable as the PDL-R38, but damn even we were impressed with ourselves! Part of the reason is the teardrop shape profile, narrower V shape deep dish rims are more susceptible to cross wind interference because they not only have steeper sides, but also a sharper edge, causing turbulence as the cross wind breaks up on the down wind side of the rim.

88mm

At 88mm high the PDL-R88 is going to cut that wind up. Oh so aero. So if you want to go for perfection for the local or international time trial or triathlon, the PDL-R88 is your baby. Not afraid of the odd crosswind, but if you are thinking gale force cross winds, maybe get yourself a PDL-R50. That's not to say they can't hack the pressure, they perform pretty damn impressively! Part of the reason is the teardrop shape profile, narrower V shape deep dish rims are more susceptible to cross wind interference because they not only have steeper sides, but also a sharper edge, causing turbulence as the cross wind breaks up on the down wind side of the rim.

QUALITY RIMS ARE NOTHING WITHOUT A QUALITY HUB

White Industries is a small little company based in Petaluma, California. Take one look at their website and you will notice a few things that matter to us:

  1. They have been around a loooong time! Square taper cranks are still in the product range
  2. They don't compromise, their hubs aren't the lightest, but still respectable, and they roll forever, last forever and have next to no freewheel friction
  3. There is beauty in their product. Quality is a funny thing, you can just tell it can't you?

These guys know their hubs. The intricate details that you don't understand without first hand experience. They also know what customer service is. And that is why we choose them.

TUBELESS READY.

We are strong advocates of tubeless technology. That is evident in our new BMX rim, one of the first rims designed to be run tubeless. And why not?! If you still love your tubes, NO PROBLEM! All our wheels can be run with tubes if that suits your setup. But consider these advantages of tubeless

  1. Better protection from flats. With no tube the tubeless sealant can do its job filling small holes, so you can ride longer and with less hassles
  2. Improved ride. Running slightly lower pressures for the same rolling resistance means you are getting a smoother, faster ride.
  3. Lighter weight. OK depending on your tubes, and how much sealant you run this can be argued, with a slightly heavier tyre casing. But on the whole, you can save rotational weight.
